Caribbean Development Bank

The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), based in Barbados, was founded in 1970. It assists its members by providing loans, some from the capital of the bank on terms similar to those available on the market and some on more favourable terms from the Special Development Fund (SDF). It also provides free technical assistance. The loans awarded by the Bank serve primarily to improve the transport and communications infrastructure and to promote small and medium-sized enterprises (through financial intermediaries).

At the end of 2009 the subscribed capital of the CDB amounted to some 713 million US dollars. Germany has been a member of the Bank since 1989, and holds 5.73 per cent of the capital. When the Special Development Fund was replenished for the seventh time, Germany contributed 12.3 million US dollars, or 6.57 per cent of the total.
