Reliable municipal partnership and solidarity in times of war

There are more than 260 German-Ukrainian municipal partnerships. One example is the one between Hürth in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and Peremyshliany in Western Ukraine. The two towns started their partnership in November 2021.

Thanks to the donation from the town of Hürth, a playground was built in the Ukrainian twin town of Peremyschljany.

Meetings between community members were organised so they could get to know each other better. They agreed to work together on civil protection and on the promotion of economic development.

After Russia’s invasion, the town of Hürth donated 1.76 million euros’ worth of aid materials, as well as a playground, tablets and smartboards for schools, and a lorry with an aerial work platform to repair power lines. At first sight, a playground might appear unnecessary for a country at war, but it is important in children’s everyday lives to give them safe spaces where they can forget the horrors of war.
