Many mothers and infants in Nigeria die as a result of inadequate pregnancy and childbirth services. Germany's support is helping to reduce health hazards for young women and foster sexual and reproductive health. A holistic family planning approach is used to educate women and men about their rights to make their own choices. The projects also improve young people's access to modern contraceptives.

A regional programme that is being co-financed by the EU is assisting the ECOWAS Commission, the West African Health Organisation, the Regional Centre for Surveillance and Disease Control and the Regional Animal Health Centre in setting up a multi-country system for improved pandemic prevention and control, in line with the One Health approach.
