Reviving an age old debate

Increasing life expectancies in countries around the world make saving for retirement an urgent issue on any policy maker’s agenda. By 2050, more than two billion people globally will be aged 60 or over; that’s more than one fifth of the nine billion people expected to live on this planet by mid-century. The majority of older people either have inadequate social protection or no social protection at all, according to the International Labour Organization.

This creates the twin challenge of designing a financially sustainable pension system, affordable for a shrinking number of tax payers, yet at the same time sufficient to provide elderly citizens with a dignified and adequate retirement income in old age.
