New position

Markus Grübel appointed Commissioner for Global Freedom of Religion

12.04.2018 |

Cabinet has appointed Member of the Bundestag Markus Grübel as the new Federal Government Commissioner for Global Freedom of Religion. His office will be set up within the Development Ministry.

Development Minister Gerd Müller commented, "Worldwide people are being persecuted because of their religion. Violence against Christians and members of other faiths is on the rise. By setting up a new office for a Commissioner for Global Freedom of Religion, the German government is sending a clear message that it supports freedom of religion and inter-faith dialogue with the aim of emphasising shared values and promoting peace. In Markus Grübel, we have a skilled professional with considerable experience at international level at the helm of this new office."

Markus Grübel has been a Member of the German Parliament since 2002, and is also a Member of the Committee for Economic Cooperation and Development. During the last legislative term, Grübel served as Parliamentary State Secretary to the Minister of Defence. As Commissioner, it will be his task to present a report on freedom of religion to the Federal Government every two years – a report covering all religions and faiths.

"Religious customs and traditions are intrinsic parts of many societies and cultures. They can advance development processes, mold societies together and foster peace. Consequently, we must take each individual person and his or her religion or belief seriously, and guarantee freedom of religion everywhere in the world," said Development Minister Gerd Müller.

Commenting on his new role, Markus Grübel said: "On my numerous visits to German Bundeswehr troops stationed abroad, for example in Iraq or the Sahel region, I have been able to see first-hand that many minority groups are under serious threat. That is why I regard my new task as serving peace and helping to reduce the causes of displacement."
