24.02.2021 | BERLIN – Commenting on the announcement by UNICEF that the first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines, facilitated via the international vaccination platform COVAX, has arrived in Ghana, German Development Minister Gerd Müller said:

“The vaccination roll-out in Africa is an important step. Because the only way out of the crisis is a global immunisation campaign. In order to now be able to vaccinate people quickly, we are using the tried and tested structures of the global immunisation alliance Gavi, which has already tackled polio and other infectious diseases very successfully. The goal is to vaccinate at least 20 per cent of people in developing countries against COVID-19 by the end of the year. However, the funding for this vaccination effort is still a long way from being secured. We cannot allow an immunisation campaign to fail because of a lack of funds - that is not right for humanitarian reasons and it is not in our own interest either. If that happens the virus will return, but this time it could be even more dangerous.”
