Development – Economy – Climate Green Hydrogen Business Alliance

Green hydrogen and its derivatives (Power-to-X/PtX) are key for a successful energy transition. At the same time, the production of green hydrogen opens up opportunities for sustainable development in Germany’s partner countries in development cooperation. In order to bring together the expertise and innovative capacity of the private sector with players working in the field of development cooperation, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) launched the Green Hydrogen Business Alliance (H2BA).

The Green Hydrogen Business Alliance acts as an interface between the private sector and the BMZ. As part of the multi-donor platform GET.pro, it supports businesses when it comes to implementing their projects in partner countries. The aim is to support the global market ramp-up of green hydrogen. There is a special focus on Germany’s partner countries in development cooperation like Brazil, Morocco, Namibia and South Africa.

Using green hydrogen and PtX to move towards a just transition – joining forces at three levels

Cross-sectoral cooperation

The Green Hydrogen Business Alliance brings together more than 200 companies, industry associations and public institutions from Europe that are involved in various stages of the green hydrogen value chain. Through regular networking and dialogue formats with representatives from the worlds of politics, industry and science, the Alliance promotes ongoing exchanges of knowledge and experience. In this way, a joint understanding is being established of the steps that are necessary in order to achieve a sustainable global market ramp-up of green hydrogen.

Market research

The Green Hydrogen Business Alliance creates a solid foundation for decision-making with regard to the planning and implementation of large-scale PtX projects. It supports the development of green PtX industries in developing and emerging economies, thereby opening up new business opportunities. Independent market trend evaluations, business case analyses and policy briefs offer its partners valuable insights. A weekly press monitor provides information about current developments in the global hydrogen sector.

Market-oriented solutions

The Green Hydrogen Business Alliance (H2BA) works to bring about a reliable enabling environment for PtX projects in its partner countries. Together with its network it develops solutions that strengthen both the private sector and local actors, and facilitate a sustainable market ramp-up. For example, H2BA has developed the financing mechanism H2Global and has contributed to the conception of the PtX Development Fund at KfW.

Companies both in Europe and in the BMZ’s partner countries benefit from networking, exchange of knowledge, project collaboration and inclusion in the BMZ’s hydrogen strategy. This coordinated ramp-up of a sustainable hydrogen sector gives partner countries a broad range of new opportunities: skilled jobs with a secure future, higher export revenues, and an improved local energy supply.
