Core area “Peaceful and inclusive societies” Strengthening communities, resolving conflicts

In South Sudan, peace committees are helping to defuse conflicts at an early point and foster community stability. In parallel, German development cooperation programmes are putting a focus on psychosocial support and protective measures for women and girls – from training for skilled personnel all the way to safe points of contact.

Building peace based on community institutions

In parallel with the agricultural development programmes, efforts are being undertaken to establish new peace committees and strengthen the capacity of existing committees. The peace committees help to resolve local conflicts peacefully and to improve community stability through their preventive efforts.

Psychosocial support and protection from violence

Another focus of Germany's activities in South Sudan is psychosocial support for women and girls, and their protection from violence. So far, more than 11,500 people have benefited from improved psychosocial services, which they can access through mobile counselling programmes and safe points of contact. More than 807 skilled workers – including teachers and health personnel – have received training so they can offer psychosocial support at schools, in communities and at advice centres.

In addition, measures have been undertaken to prevent gender-based violence. So far, over 55,000 women and girls have been given access to protective measures, psychosocial support and safe spaces.
