Core area “Conserving nature and natural resources, protecting life on Earth” Access to safe drinking water

One of the biggest challenges in South Sudan is the supply of water. With the help of German development projects, many households now enjoy better quality of life thanks to access to safe drinking water and improved hygiene.

Water supply is one of the most urgent challenges in South Sudan. Thanks to German development cooperation programmes, more than 230,000 people have so far been given access to safe drinking water. The Lologo water system in Juba is currently supplying water for more than 46,000 people, including 31,000 internally displaced persons. A total of 79 water kiosks, 15 new wells and more than 75 kilometres of distribution networks have been built.

These efforts have improved hygiene and reduced the risk of diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea, and, what is more, they have significantly improved people's quality of life. The improvements particularly benefit women and children, who previously had to walk for hours to fetch water. And the introduction of tariff models is increasing the systems' economic viability and reducing communities' dependency on external assistance.
