Germany is assisting Mauritania in protecting its species-rich fishing grounds, sustainably managing the farming, grazing and forest land in the south of the country and adapting to climate change.

For instance, Germany is contributing to Mauritania’s efforts to improve the management of its coastal national parks, link up its protected areas and provide long-term financial security for them. A project that uses radar technology to monitor fishing has proved helpful in protecting stocks from being overfished by foreign fishing fleets.

Protecting natural resources

Cooperation in the south of the country focuses on the careful management of natural resources and the environmentally sound use of forest and grazing lands. With Germany’s support, farmers there have formed user communities; they now decide jointly how they will manage soil, forest and water resources. The proportion of women occupying positions in the important bodies of the user associations has increased significantly.

One purpose of the project is to further develop the value chains of products other than wood. The estimated revenues of the user associations have already increased by more than 10 per cent.
