Core area "Conserving nature and natural resources, protecting life on Earth" Achieving food security, protecting soils and fish stocks

Germany is helping Mauritania with protecting its very species-rich fishing grounds, sustainably managing the farming, grazing and forest lands in the south of the country and adapting to climate change.

Germany is supporting, for instance, Mauritania's efforts to improve the management of its coastal national parks, link its protected areas and provide long-term financial security for them. A project on radar-based monitoring of fishing has contributed successfully to protecting stocks from being overfished by foreign fishing fleets.

Protection of natural resources

Cooperation in the south of the country focuses on the careful management of natural resources and environmentally sound use of forest and grazing lands. With Germany’s support, farmers there have formed user communities; they now decide jointly how they will manage soil, forest and water resources. The number of women in the important bodies of the user associations has increased significantly.

One purpose of the project is to expand the value chains of products that are not made from wood. The estimated revenues of the user associations have already increased by more than ten per cent.
