Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency

The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) was founded in 1988 and has 179 members (as at: March 2013). The Federal Republic of Germany is a founding member and holds 5.05 per cent of the subscribed capital of MIGA. It holds 4.19 per cent of the voting rights within MIGA.

MIGA covers private-sector direct investment in de­vel­op­ing coun­tries for non-commercial (political) risks such as transfer restrictions, breach of contract, war and civil disturbance, or expropriation. In 2012, new investment guarantee agreements for 52 projects were entered into worth a total of 2.7 billion US dollars. The total value of new and ongoing MIGA guarantees was 10.3 billion US dollars.

MIGA also offers services in the field of technical assistance and investment consultancy, with a view to supporting investment promotion activities, disseminating relevant information via the Internet and strengthening pertinent capacities in de­vel­op­ing coun­tries.
