Cooperation in action Reliable municipal partnership and solidarity in times of war

    There are approximately 200 German-Ukrainian municipal partnerships. One example is the one between Hürth in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and Peremyshliany in Western Ukraine. The two towns started their partnership in November 2021.

    Thanks to the donation from the town of Hürth, a playground was built in the Ukrainian twin town of Peremyschljany.

    Their representatives got to know each other better through personal meetings. They agreed to work together on civil protection and on the promotion of economic development.

    After Russia's invasion, the City of Hürth donated 1.76 million euros' worth of aid materials, as well as a playground, tablets and smartboards for schools, and a truck with an aerial work platform to repair power lines. At first sight, a playground might appear unnecessary for a country at war, but it is important in children's everyday lives to give them safe spaces where they can forget the horrors of war.
