How you can help

There are many ways of getting involved in order to alleviate the suffering of displaced people. In Germany, for instance, many refugees are isolated from the local population. Personal encounters help them get used to their new surroundings.

There are people who can help you get in touch with refugees: numerous civil society initiatives are working locally to assist refugees in Germany, offering German classes and helping children with their homework. Ask at your local town hall about organisations that are assisting refugees in your area, and offer your help!

Engagement Global – Service for Development Initiatives has a help desk specifically for individuals wishing to volunteer and can tell you where you can help refugees living in your area.

Hotline of the volunteer help desk:

0800 188 7 188 (freephone number)

Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm (in German)

In view of the current debate within Germany, it is also important to talk about displacement and educate people about the underlying causes of displacement and migration. You can find lots more information here on the BMZ website and on the website of the UN Refugee Agency
