Defining rights

Clearly defining rights on forest access, management and use is an important aspect of Germany’s development activities in the forest sector. It includes enforcing recognition of private and community forest ownership.

If resources are to be protected effectively, rural populations must be involved in the management of forests and share in the benefits generated by them.

Where the processing and marketing of timber and other forest products is concerned, good cooperation with private enterprises has an important role to play. Germany helps to improve this cooperation by advising non-governmental organisations and associations. Also, advice is provided to in-country partner organisations and institutions on the establishment of control and regulatory mechanisms and on land use planning.
