The German contribution
Promoting regional initiatives
The impact of forest misuse and degradation is felt across international borders; single initiatives are not effective in confronting degradation. Many countries have recognised this and are harmonising their political initiatives and legal provisions with those of their neighbours. Germany is supporting such regional initiatives in the three major rainforest regions: the Congo River Basin, the Amazon River Basin and Southeast Asia.
- Germany is a member of the Congo Forest Basin Partnership (CBFP) and is assisting the Secretariat of the Central African Forests Commission (Commission des Forêts d'Afrique Centrale – COMIFAC) in formulating a regional forest and biological diversity conservation policy.
- Germany is advising the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) on the formulation of a comprehensive, sustainable and transnational natural resources policy for the Amazon Region.
- In Southeast Asia, Germany is assisting the Secretariat of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in drawing up and implementing a regional forest programme.
