Germany's contribution

The CCD project: actively combating desertification

Cultivation of land in northern Kenya

Germany launched the "Convention Project to Combat Desertification" (CCD project) in 1999 under the auspices of GIZ. The purpose of the project is to develop strategies and instruments for the implementation of the UNCCD. In the context of the project, the BMZ will also offer advisory services within the international policy dialogue, and there will be close cooperation with international institutions – including the UNCCD Secretariat and the Global Mechanism in Bonn, and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) based in Washington. The CCD project supports innovative approaches on sustainable land management in selected partner countries.

An important part of efforts to combat desertification is also to raise awareness of relevant issues among people in countries that are not directly affected. That is why the BMZ is helping the CCD project inform policy makers and people in Germany about these issues.
