Germany's contribution

Promotion via international organisations

A significant share of the German funds set aside for development cooperation is deployed via international organisations. Via these organisations, the Federal Republic of Germany also promotes effective desertification control programmes.

In 2007, the parties to the International Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) adopted a new ten year strategy (2008-2018) to effectively implement the goals enshrined in the Convention. It is on this basis that institutional reforms were agreed upon in September 2009 in order to enhance the effectiveness and reach of international cooperation in the fight against desertification.

These reforms and the new leading role of UNCCD in formulating goal 15.3 of the 2030 Agenda (land degradation neutrality) are already showing a positive effect.
