Raw materials as a factor in development

Background: Raw materials – an opportunity for sustainable economic development

Mineral and energy resources are of key importance worldwide, especially for industrialised countries like Germany. Without them, the technical advances that are a part of our modern lives would not exist. At the same time, such raw materials are a major source of income for many developing countries. The raw materials sector offers them opportunities for social, political and economic development. Yet where there is poor governance, extractive projects can also lead to negative developments such as corruption, environmental pollution or social conflict. more

German development cooperation in the raw materials sector

The raw materials sector can play a major role in reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development. But this can only happen if the necessary political, economic and social environment is supported and stabilised in the partner countries. Good governance, an appropriate legal framework and a transparent and competent administration are key elements and therefore a focus of German development cooperation. more

International initiatives

Germany supports international initiatives in the raw materials sector and promotes the creation of regulatory mechanisms that apply worldwide. The German government also contributes to international processes to develop and roll out recognised minimum standards for environmental protection and industrial health and safety like the ILO Core Labour Standards, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the principles of the UN Global Compact Initiative. more

The Extractives and Development sector programme

The Extractives and Development sector programme supports government institutions in developing countries to establish their extractive sector to benefit sustainable development in the countries on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). more
