German activities Advising partner countries on migration policy
Seizing the opportunities and reducing the risks of migration
The BMZ supports its partner countries with regard to making use of the opportunities that migration offers while reducing the risks and negative impacts such as a developmentally harmful brain drain. This means, for example, seeking to ensure that only as many nursing staff migrate as the health system in the partner country can bear to lose. Such migration must not be allowed to impact negatively on the health care provided for the people in our partner countries.
In addition, the BMZ supports the efforts of its partner countries to improve local conditions so that people no longer feel forced to migrate abroad. The focus is on creating good reception conditions for migrants, fighting human trafficking and supporting the reintegration of returning migrants.
With these goals in mind, the BMZ is currently advising the governments of Niger, Morocco, Kosovo and Tajikistan, and the African Union Commission.
German experts advise the governments of countries of origin, for example with regard to setting up relevant work units, and provide further training for local staff. Their work covers aspects such as supporting the reintegration of returnees, supporting job seekers and building up networks for knowledge transfer.
