A large share of the funds appropriated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for education projects benefits the partner countries with which the BMZ has agreed to make education a priority area of cooperation.

Besides cooperating directly with development partners on education projects, Germany is also involved in the work being done by international organisations to improve basic education. One of the BMZ’s priority areas in multilateral cooperation is the support it gives to the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). Germany makes financial contributions to the GPE multi-donor trust fund and supports the GPE on the ground by providing experts and through its own complementary educational measures.

In 2013, the BMZ signed a cooperation agreement with the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, which also includes education as a joint field of action. UNICEF is a crucial partner for the BMZ, especially as regards efforts to support education in emergency situations.

Germany is a founding member of the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030. Germany is also involved in the education programmes of the European Union and the World Bank through its financial contributions to these organisations.
