The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (External link) (UNIDO) was founded in 1966. UNIDO is a specialized agency of the United Nations with 170 member states.

UNIDO primarily helps developing countries build up a sustainable and environmentally sound economic infrastructure.

UNIDO is the only multilateral organization that has the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 as its core task: sustainable industrial development, innovation and infrastructure.

Federal Minister for Development Gerd Müller
We will only achieve climate protection and food security with inclusive and sustainable industrialization. This is why UNIDO is now more important than ever.

Within the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is the (lead) ministry responsible for UNIDO. The BMZ not only pays the annual German membership fee to UNIDO (around seven million euros per year), but also has many years of experience in project and program-related cooperation with UNIDO.

For several years, the focus of the cooperation between BMZ and UNIDO was on the production of important medications with guaranteed quality standards in some African countries such as Kenya and Ghana. In 2019, the Federal Government held for the first time a comprehensive strategic dialogue with UNIDO in Berlin.

The following priority areas were agreed upon and later recorded in a roadmap:

  • Trade-related development cooperation, with quality standards for products from developing countries,
  • Employment and technology transfer,
  • Climate action, including renewable energy and energy efficiency, and
  • Emergency aid programs in crisis and post-crisis situations such as Corona/Covid-19.
