Children and youth Improving access to basic education

In Burkina Faso, protecting vulnerable population groups, which include children and socially disadvantaged youth, is of particular importance.

Although the legal framework is quite good overall, children’s rights are often abused and violated. Forced marriage, early pregnancy and female genital mutilation are particular risks for girls, and hazardous child labour and child trafficking are widespread.

School scholarships and vocational training grants and the construction of school canteens are a way to improve access to basic education and vocational training for children and young people. Child protection networks and shelters are being established and expanded to protect children and youth against violence and exploitation with a view to improving their living situation and their prospects for the future.
