Training session for mapping in Namibia

The Extractives and Development sector programme supports partner countries of German development cooperation in establishing an extractive sector in accordance with the principles of sustainability.

The programme supports governments in promoting sustainable extractive industries at national and local level. Its focus is not restricted to considerations regarding competitiveness and economic efficiency but also addresses the structural development of a diversified economy.

To complement this, the programme provides advice to partner countries of German development cooperation with the aim of reducing social, environmental and human rights risks associated with the extractive sector. As a means to this end, the sector programme develops new approaches in line with the themes of the BMZ Strategy Paper on Extractive Resources (PDF 607 KB, accessible), and pilots them in practice. The results of this work are evaluated and are then incorporated into German development cooperation in the extractive sector.
