17.01.2024 UNCAC CoSP 2023: Side Event on Critical Minerals and Corruption Internal link

The Sector Programme “Extractives and Development” (GIZ) attended the tenth Conference of the States Parties (CoSP) to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) that took place in Atlanta, USA, December 11 to 15, 2023. GIZ hosted a side event on “Critical Minerals and Corruption” which examined the role of illicit financial flows and corruption in the exploitation of minerals.

The Sector Programme “Extractives and Development” of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR (External link)) invites the gold industry, civil society, academia and development cooperation to the following workshop: “Responsible Gold: Sharing insights, connecting actors and enhancing supply chains”. The workshop is part of the event series “Responsible Gold” and takes place on November 27, 2023 from 11:30am-16:30pm.

26.06.2023 New study: Sustainable Transformation in Coal Regions of the Global South: Challenges from a Resource Nexus Perspective Internal link

The climate crisis requires a global energy transition away from fossil fuels. Coal still plays a significant role in developing countries' economies. A Just Energy Transition implies tackling all challenges that come with phasing out coal in a way that leaves no one behind. A new BMZ-commissioned study analyzes the perspectives for the Just Energy Transition in coal regions in Indonesia, Colombia, South Africa and Mozambique. The study was written by the United Nations University Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES).

    The Inhorgenta is Europe's largest jewellery trade fair. The BGR sector programme has its own stand to present the “Forum Responsible Gold ”. It also organises a panel discussion together with the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) and Fairever. More information (External link).

    Great Lakes Mining and Investment Conference

    The Great Lakes Mining and Investment Conference is organised by the ICGLR, an intergovernmental organisation composed of 12 Member States in the African Great Lakes, and will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from February 13 to 15. Its aim is to resolve the challenges at the intersection of mineral resource governance and peace and security by increasing regional cooperation and promoting sustainable development. Who are we?

On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Sector Programme “Extractives and Development” is jointly implemented by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

The Sector Programme “Extractives and Development” supports the BMZ in shaping the national and international development policy agenda in the extractive sector through its own impulses and innovations, and advises the BMZ continuously and comprehensively on economic and policy issues related to extractives.
