Public private partnerships

Development partnerships with the private sector under bilateral agreements with developing countries

When international development projects and programmes are being planned, planners already look into the issue of whether cooperation with the private sector might be able to turn development-policy challenges into business opportunities. Cooperation with the private sector often makes larger-scale programmes feasible, for instance to develop economic and social infrastructure, promote renewable energies, or improve water supply and sanitation.

Development partnerships that are supported through bilateral development cooperation funds are usually able to take advantage of a particularly conducive environment. However, the BMZ only supports private-sector activities where these make a contribution to the development of the partner country concerned, and could not be realised without this support.

The opportunities for cooperation are manifold. In any given case the precise scope will depend on the agreements entered into by the Federal Republic of Germany with the partner country at the government negotiations.

Companies interested in finding out more about the opportunities for launching operations in specific partner countries are advised to begin by making enquiries with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
