Working together to fight HIV and AIDS

Background: HIV and AIDS

It is over 25 years since a disease started spreading across the globe whose name has become synonymous with untold human suffering: AIDS. Today more than 33 million people are estimated to be carrying HIV, the virus which triggers the immune deficiency syndrome. Most of the people concerned live in developing countries. The number is especially high in sub-Saharan Africa, where in some countries more than a fifth of the adult population is infected. The pandemic is a threat to the existence of entire societies. It is not only a disaster in human terms, but in economic terms too. The fight against AIDS is an important task and one of the greatest challenges facing international and German development policy.

German commitment: The fight against AIDS

"We cannot win the fight against HIV/AIDS unless we pursue a development policy that is coordinated not just nationally, but also internationally. We must have the courage to break the taboos still attaching to AIDS in many parts of the world. Specifically, it is about education and counselling, especially for women. Access to condoms and well functioning health services are the key to successful prevention and vital care services." These were the words of German Development Minister Wieczorek-Zeul when she presented the German government's position on AIDS control at the International AIDS Conference in Toronto in August 2006. Germany is one of the largest donors worldwide in this field.
