Food aid – when crises strike

Rapid assistance when food supplies are threatened

When developing countries are hit by natural disasters or armed hostilities break out, the food security of the people in the area affected is almost always jeopardised. Crises and conflicts also destroy the societal and political order. Many government in this situation are unable to overcome the crisis without external support. The worst hit are generally the poorest and marginalised sections of the population.

Food Aid Convention – an undertaking to fight hunger in the world

Under the provisions of the 1999 Food Aid Convention, Germany has undertaken to alleviate suffering during crises and disasters and to fight hunger in the world, by providing food aid worth a minimum of 56.24 million euros per annum. Germany meets this commitment within the scope of food security projects in partner countries. The Federal Republic of Germany also supports the assistance provided by the European Union and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
