Fighting hunger and securing food

Background: Realising the right to food

Hunger is worsening. More than one billion people were undernourished in 2009 – more than ever before. Every day thousands of people die in developing countries as a result of undernourishment, more than half of them children under the age of five. In cooperation with other donors Germany is intensively involved in the war on hunger and poverty. Achieving food security, promoting agriculture and developing rural areas, while protecting natural resources are important goals of German development cooperation.

Cutting agricultural subsidies and improving the chances of developing countries to trade

Agricultural export subsidies in industrialised countries often make it much more difficult for products from developing countries to be competitive on the global market. Developing countries can only be given a fair chance on the world market if industrialised countries reduce their agricultural subsidies and remove barriers to the import of goods from developing countries. Germany is working to have the interests of developing countries taken into more account in the global trading system.

Promoting agricultural research – improving food supplies

Experts calculate that the world's population will top nine billion by 2050. The majority will live in developing countries. This will push up the demand for food enormously, but a limited amount of farmland is available. Agricultural research sees itself faced with the task of securing food supplies for a growing number of people.

Food aid – a commitment to fighting hunger

Development-oriented emergency and transitional aid enables the Federal Republic of Germany to respond swiftly and flexibly to crises, conflicts and natural disasters. It also makes it possible to provide help rapidly when called on to do so by the United Nations, for example in the wake of flooding or earthquakes. German emergency aid helps prevent further disasters and lays the foundations for sustainable development once the immediate crisis has been mastered.
