Fighting hunger

Background: Hunger in the world

Hunger is worsening. More than one billion people were undernourished in 2009 – more than ever before. Every day thousands of people die in developing countries as a result of undernourishment, more than half of them children under the age of five. More people suffer from hunger and undernourishment than from AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

The right to food – international agreements

The UN's 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights firmly establishes the right to food. It is also included in the 1976 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The signatories to the Covenant are obligated under international law to realise the right to food in their country. All individuals must either have access to production inputs including land, seed and water, or an adequate income to purchase food.

Food security – a key element of German development policy

In the coalition agreement dated October 2009, the governing parties in Germany, CDU, CSU and FDP, agreed to make rural development and food security focuses of development work during this legislative period. At international level, Germany is working to improve the framework for food security through its membership of the European Union and various international organisations.
