Sub-Saharan Africa
Economically, Cameroon is one of the strongest of the central African states. Nevertheless, progress with economic and social development is not satisfactory in relation to its potential. Cameroon enjoys relative political stability in spite of the fact that its democracy exhibits major shortcomings.
The most significant branches of the economy are the service sector, the manufacturing and processing industries and agriculture, which provides employment for the majority of people.
With more than 200 ethnic groups and its breath-taking scenic diversity, Cameroon is "all of Africa in one country", stretching from the Atlantic Ocean up to Lake Chad. The tropical rainforests in the south of Cameroon exhibit some of the greatest biodiversity in the world. This habitat is, however, seriously under threat, especially from increasing human settlement and the non-sustainable utilisation of natural resources.
Relations between Cameroon and Germany
Before the First World War, Cameroon was a German colony. Subsequently the country was divided into two mandate territories, administered by France and Great Britain. These were not reunified until 1961, following independence from France. Germany's image in Cameroon is shaped by memories of the colonial past. Germany is highly regarded, and this is reflected in the population's great interest in modern Germany and the German language. An estimated 200,000 Cameroonian schoolchildren are learning German, and more than 6,000 Cameroonians are studying in Germany.
A key focus of German development cooperation with its partner country Cameroon is the sustainable use of natural resources, especially the tropical forests, which are also extremely important for global climate protection. The two countries also work closely in the fields of health and HIV/AIDS, decentralisation, participatory development and good governance.
