Georgia

Shortly after the 1918 revolution, which put an end to Czarist rule, Germany and Georgia established close relations. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, in 1991 Germany was the first country to recognise Georgia's independence. The close and friendly relationship between Georgia and Germany goes back almost 200 years. In the last 17 years cooperation has become very close; each country is very well regarded by the other.

Georgia is home to almost one hundred different ethnic groups. The Georgians themselves make up a good two-thirds of the population. The country has a rich, independent cultural heritage, which withstood annexation by Russia and the many years for which it was part of the Soviet Union, and enjoys international renown.

Georgia used to be a comparatively wealthy Soviet republic. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, however, consumer markets and the tourism sector collapsed and gross domestic product initially plummeted by 70 per cent. From the mid-1990s, the Georgian economy slowly recovered and is now making substantial progress.

The economic and political problems facing the country today have many root causes, among which are the loss of the shared economic area of the USSR and conflicts with the breakaway territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. After decades under an economic system that was not market-oriented, Georgia’s economic structures are not making it easy to establish a place in the global economy.

The Federal Republic of Germany is actively committed to the reconstruction of Georgia and the South Caucasus region. The German government's Caucasus Initiative is an expression of Germany's commitment to regional cooperation and to conflict prevention between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. The initiative was launched by German Development Minister, Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, when she visited the Caucasus in April 2001.
