Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency

The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) was founded in 1988 and has 175 members (as at: October 2009). The Federal Republic of Germany is a founding member and holds 5.05 per cent of the subscribed capital of MIGA.

MIGA covers private-sector direct investment in developing countries for non-commercial risks such as transfer restrictions, breach of contract, war and civil disturbance, or expropriation. In 2009, investment guarantee agreements for 26 projects were entered into worth a total of 1.4 billion US dollars. Germany holds 4.19 per cent of the voting rights within MIGA.

MIGA also offers services in the field of technical assistance and investment consultancy, with a view to supporting investment promotion activities, disseminating relevant information via the Internet (Investment Promotion Network, IPAnet) and strengthening pertinent capacities in developing countries.
