United Nations Children's Fund
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has been working for the good of the children of the world since 1946. It acts on the basis of the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which obliges member states to protect the survival of children, to foster their development, to protect them against abuse and violence, and to involve them in important decisions.
The work of UNICEF is geared to the Millennium Development Goals, the calls of the 2002 New York World Summit for Children and the decisions of the Millennium +5 Summit. The work of UNICEF focuses on the rights of the child and on emergency and development measures.
In 2008/2009 UNICEF's total budget was some 10.3 billion US dollars (3.4 billion more than in 2006/2007). The German government contributed a total of more than 16 million US dollars to this sum. UNICEF also received nearly 80 million
US dollars from the "Deutsches Komitee für UNICEF e.V." in Cologne in 2008. The German national committee is thus one of the biggest donors to UNICEF.
