UN-HABITAT

The United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (UNCHS/Habitat) was founded in 1978 following the first UN Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat I) in Vancouver, Canada.

In 2002, the UNCHS became the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT). UN-HABITAT is the central organisation of the UN system in the field of urban development, human settlements and housing supply in developing and transition countries. It is based in Nairobi, Kenya. Its aim is to promote sustainable urban development.

UN-HABITAT is financed from a variety of sources, including the regular UN budget. In 2007, Germany contributed some 116,000 US dollars to financing UN-HABITAT over and above its contributions to the UN budget.
