United Nations

International Fund for Agricultural Development

At the World Food Conference in 1974 it was decided to set up the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

IFAD is a specialised agency of the United Nations and focuses on fighting poverty in rural areas. To this end, it awards low-interest loans to developing countries.

The Fund currently has 165 members. Germany was one of the founding members. In February 2009 the decision was taken to replenish the Fund for the eighth time. Pledges totalling 1.06 billion US dollars were made for the period 2010 - 2012. Germany will be contributing a share of 6.5 per cent.
