Asian Development Bank
Germany is a founding member of both the Asian Development Bank (ADB), founded in 1966 in Manila (Philippines), and of the Asian Development Fund (ADF) founded in 1973.
The ADB is involved in a large number of social and economic projects which are intended to improve the living conditions of the people in the region. The overall objective of the Bank is to reduce poverty. Its policies are aligned with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Bank concentrates on promoting broad-impact, sustainable growth, in particular in the infrastructure sector. At the end of 2008, the capital stock of the ADB totalled 55 billion US dollars, of which Germany holds 4.3 per cent. The decision was taken in April 2009 to increase its capital by 200 per cent as compared to the previous share capital.
Through the ADF, the ADB provides low-interest loans and grants to poorer regional members. When the ADF was replenished for the tenth time for the period 2009-2012, Germany contributed some 151 million euros, or 4.8 per cent of the total.
