Evaluation and auditing

Aims, principles and methods:
Examining the past – shaping the future

Those who learn from the past can do a better job in the future. In order to determine what progress has been made, but also in order to recognise un­de­sirable developments in time, the BMZ commissions eva­lua­tions of the development programmes supported by the German government. A specia­lised unit was created back in 1970 with the sole responsibility of carrying out this task.

Evaluation reports: Success and failure examined

Evaluation reports represent the opinion of the independent evaluation team and not necessarily of the BMZ. In accordance with the principles of trans­parency, all evaluation reports are accessible to the public. The executive summaries (many in English) are published on this website; full reports (mostly in German) are available upon request.

Efficiency Control: Auditing

Each year, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) issues grants for activities carried out by organisations such as the political foundations, the German Development Service, German Agro Action, Caritas Germany and the central agencies of the churches. This involves working with a large number of implementing organisations and other bodies and the BMZ invests some 800 million euros an­nu­al­ly. The public expects these government funds to be used effectively and not wasted or used improperly.
