Anchor countries

Anchor countries are an important target group of German development cooperation; they are countries that exert a significant economic and political influence in their regions and play an ever larger role in shaping international relations. They play a key role for economic and political stability in their regions and also in meeting global challenges such as climate and environmental protection, shaping the global economy and ensuring that development is sustainable, just and peaceful.

Germany cooperates with nine anchor countries in the field of development cooperation. They are China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico and Turkey. Development cooperation with these countries is being steadily developed into strategic partnerships, having regard to the development status and performance of each anchor country and the special challenges facing it in its region.
