Bonn office

Our main office

Bonn office. Copyright: BMZThe main office of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is in Bonn, in spite of the fact that the government and the two houses of the German parliament (Bundestag and Bundesrat) now sit in Berlin.

The 1994 Berlin/Bonn Act stipulated that, to compensate for the fact that the government was moving to Berlin, the Bonn region was to become a "centre of development policy, national, international and supranational bodies". Since then, more than 150 international organisations and NGOs have set up offices in the Bonn region, including several United Nations bodies. Bonn is home to a number of important science and research centres. The German Development Service (DED), the German Development Institute (GDI) and the German Foundation for International Development, which has now merged with the Carl Duisberg Society to form InWEnt Capacity Building International, Germany, have been based in Bonn since early 2000. Since 2003, Germany’s world broadcasting service "Deutsche Welle" has added another international feather to Bonn’s cap. And the Center for International Cooperation Bonn GmbH (CIC Bonn GmbH) began operating in 2002.

About 80 per cent of the staff of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) work at the Bonn Office, where the following Directorates-General are based:

Directorate-General 1:
Central management; cooperation with civil society forces

Directorate-General 2:
Cooperation with countries and regions; Asia; Latin America; Europe; peacebuilding; United Nations

Directorate-General 3:
