Golden rules for successful partnership – the design principles
Partnership-based cooperation among all stakeholders is the single most important principle for the successful design of German development policy. In order to satisfy this fundamental principle, the BMZ has drafted a set of rules – the design principles of German development cooperation.
Participation and ‘ownership’ are part of these principles. The people in Germany’s partner countries are actively involved in the design of their projects. They have a decisive voice in how a project should develop. That also means that they are themselves responsible for their project from the outset. This ensures that the projects can continue after BMZ support has ended.
Another principle requires that each project be adapted as far as possible to local conditions - tailored to local needs. This differentiated support strategy is a factor in the success of German development policy.
When we talk about development partnerships we do not just mean relations with governments or administrations. Cooperation with all groups within society is also important for a good partnership. The participation of these ‘players’ is another important design principle of German development cooperation – not just in our partner countries but also in an international context.
