22.03.2010:
World Water Day
Water is the Earth’s most precious resource. There is no substitute for it – and, most importantly, it is in scarce supply. In more than 30 countries across the world people are currently facing the threat of acute water shortages. Polluted drinking water is the cause of 80 per cent of all illnesses in poor countries. Since 1993, the International Day of Water has been marked each year, in order to raise awareness of the value of water.
The German Development Ministry is helping to improve the situation for those affected by water shortages in developing countries. Germany is the second biggest donor worldwide in the water sector. Each year it invests some 305 million euros in projects and programmes concerned with matters such as water-saving technologies or drinking water supply in general.
