Commenting on the conclusion of the global climate conference in Madrid, German Development Minister Gerd Müller said:

"Madrid was disappointing and still it is up to the countries to take action. The industrialised countries have long since decided to fulfil their pledge of 100 billion for adaptation measures in the developing countries, only they have not done it. The onus is on the G20 countries to act and not wait until the next COP. Germany has fulfilled its pledges and we are now strengthening our cooperation in the context of climate action with the developing countries as regards building green energy structures, because that will be a deciding factor for the achievement of the 2-per cent goal.

The German Development Ministry is acting. We are working to realise climate protection in developing countries, for example with renewable energies. For adaptation to climate change, we are investing in climate-resilient agriculture. And for people affected by climate damage in climate risk insurance schemes. The goal must be to support the African countries in making the leap to a carbon-free economy without going via the coal route."
