Press release of 05.02.2016 |

Berlin – Germany is supporting the recovery in West Africa following the Ebola epidemic. Strengthening health systems and supporting economic and social recovery in the region hit by Ebola were topics on the agenda for the visit that Thomas Silberhorn, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, made to Guinea and Sierra Leone.

"The successful effort to fight the Ebola epidemic must now be translated into sustainable measures to strengthen and stabilise health care systems. In order to achieve that goal there will need to be enough health stations and sufficient trained healthcare staff. That is why we have set up a special health programme to support countries in Africa, including Guinea and Sierra Leone. As part of this special programme health centres are being equipped, staff are being trained and access to medical care is being improved."

Funding for the programme is 205 million euros for a two-year period. The regional focus is on the West African countries that were directly affected by Ebola, their neighbouring countries and countries with very weak health systems.

For the projects in Guinea a total of 47 million euros has been earmarked for a period of two years. This funding consists of 32 million euros to strengthen the health system and 15 millions euros to support basic education.

In Sierra Leone projects worth about 60 million euros are being supported in 2015 and 2016. About half of this funding is earmarked for strengthening the health sector. About 30 million euros will be used to foster projects concerned with sustainable economic development and youth employment.

In addition to meetings with the President of Guinea, Alpha Condé, and the Foreign Minister of Sierra Leone, Samura Kamara, State Secretary Silberhorn also met with other ministers and representatives of international organisations in order to discuss the coordination of the recovery after the Ebola epidemic.
