About one week after the launch of the Textiles Partnership in Germany, Federal Minister Gerd Müller has been finding out more about social and environmental standards in the Chinese textiles industry.

Some 80 representatives from the textiles sector met up with the Minister in Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province for a round table discussion on "Sustainability in the Textiles Industry".

"I am returning to Germany with very encouraging impressions," Müller said. "The knowledge that every piece of clothing begins with a person who must be able to live on the work that goes into it and whose health must be respected is gradually moving into the centre of focus in the producing countries too. China is on the right track here and as one of the leading production locations for textiles is showing the way for others to follow."

In the morning Minister Müller had visited a textiles factory that produces goods for a German sports manufacturer. This evening Minister Müller's two-day visit to China will end with a meeting with representatives from German companies in Shanghai.

Yesterday in Beijing Gerd Müller announced the kick-off for a new phase of the German-Chinese development cooperation partnership. "China is moving from being a recipient to become a donor. It is therefore right that conventional development assistance with China is now coming to an end and that we are discovering a new form of innovative partnership," said Müller after a meeting with trade minister Gao Hucheng. The two ministers agreed to quickly develop a timetable for joint projects concerned with climate, environmental and energy issues. To that end it was decided that a government commission should be set up. Industry, science and research experts will also be members of the commission. The commission will convene a government level meeting once a year.
