In our work for sustainable development, we are fully aware of our global responsibility. The challenges involved are huge. Almost one billion people throughout the world still suffer from hunger. The world's population is continuing to grow. We have the knowledge and expertise to solve these challenges to the survival of humankind. The Coalition Agreement has charted the course. Fostering sustainable agriculture in our partner countries is an essential part of the effort to effectively address global hunger. Other crucial issues are economic growth and employment, climate action and the protection of global public goods, peacebuilding, education and health care. In all this, my politics are rooted in Christian responsibility."

The focus is on achieving the Millennium Development Goals. 2015 will be a watershed year for development policy with negotiations on new international development and sustainability goals.

"Development policy is about nothing less than shaping our global future and safeguarding creation," said Minister Müller. "The BMZ is a key actor in international cooperation. It manages the German government's second-largest investment budget and has a lot of power to move things. The Coalition Agreement envisages an additional two billion euros for development policy."

Minister Müller has announced an intensive dialogue that is to lead to a charter for the future and will involve all development actors.
