United Nations Office for Project Services

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), which is based in Copenhagen, was split off from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1995. Within the UN system it is now an independent service provider in development cooperation, combining the principles of the UN with private sector efficiency.

UNOPS does not finance any projects of its own, but is commissioned by UN bodies and other donors to implement development programmes, which it then realises in a cost-efficient way. Since 2008 UNOPS has played a central part in the procurement system of the United Nations, having taken over other UN sub-bodies. The Office is self-financing.
