United Nations Development Programme

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was founded in 1965, and is based in New York. It is the central organisation of the United Nations' development funds and programmes and plays a key role in efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. It cooperates with 166 states.

UNDP supports partner countries with policy advisory services and capacity building in the following five fields:

  • Democracy and good governance

  • Poverty reduction

  • Crisis prevention and conflict transformation

  • Energy and the environment

  • HIV/AIDS

It also coordinates the UN's development activities in individual countries, is chair of the United Nations Development Group (UNDG), and thus also plays an important part in realising reforms within the UN system. Finally, it strives to have the concerns of developing countries publicised. Every year the UNDP publishes its Human Development Report, which investigates topical issues of global importance. It also contains information on the human development situation, including a ranking list based on the organisation's "Human Development Index" (HDI).

UNDP budget

In 2008, the UNDP had a regular budget totalling 1.1 billion US dollars. This was then supplemented by specially earmarked contributions which amounted to roughly 4.7 billion US dollars, which the UNDP can only use for the purpose specified by donors. All contributions to the UNDP are voluntary.

Germany maintains close political and technical relations with the UNDP. In years ending in an odd number, Germany has a seat and a vote on the 36-strong Executive Board of the UNDP. In 2008, Germany contributed 28.1 million euros to the regular budget of UNDP (as compared to 34 million euros in 2007). Moreover, in 2008 the Federal Republic of Germany contributed some eight million euros of tied aid to support UNDP projects, particularly in the key sectors of crisis prevention and democracy and good governance.
