DW Akademie

DW Akademie is Germany's leading organisation for international media development. It has been engaged in promoting free and independent media since 1965. DW Akademie is run by Germany's international public broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW).

DW Akademie supports the development of free and transparent media systems in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Central Asia. Together with local partners it works to improve general political and legal frameworks, to support responsibility and diversity in journalism, and to train media workers.

Achieving economic viability and ensuring professional quality are key challenges. The regional teams of DW Akademie work with the media, and with political leaders, civil society organisations, citizen journalists and education institutions in order to achieve lasting change. Through their expertise and commitment, the trainers and consultants of DW Akademie help to give people the means to play an active role in shaping public debate.

In Germany, DW Akademie offers intercultural media workshops which are held at its centres in Bonn and Berlin. It also trains future DW journalists. DW Akademie has been offering an International Media Studies Master's programme since 2009. The bilingual course (German and English) is a two-year programme combining media development, media management, journalism and communications.
