Poverty reduction and social integration in cities

A man stands in front of his dwelling in the Kibera slums, Kenya.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) implements a broad spectrum of measures to combat urban poverty. Working on behalf of the BMZ, German experts support city councils in partner countries in establishing and expanding the economic and social infrastructure as well as the access by poor sections of the population to basic services. For example, financial support from Germany helps in providing the population with access to safe and affordable drinking water, and in introducing environmentally friendly wastewater and waste disposal systems. Energy supply and local public transportation systems are expanded in a climate friendly way, slums are modernised, and housing, schools and health centres are built or upgraded.

In addition, in many municipalities, Germany contributes to local business development and employment promotion, for example through training courses or microloans for small business owners.
