Prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases

Anti HIV/AIDS poster on the streets of Sal island, Cape verde.

Infection with sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS, often results from a lack of knowledge or violations of the right to sexual self-determination. Education and personality development are therefore important instruments of prevention.

Sexually transmitted diseases are prevalent worldwide; they are spreading faster in the poor countries. Protection against communicable diseases is often neglected in marriage and steady partnerships. Access to condoms and information on how to use them correctly is especially important for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

German development policy is working to make condoms available to everyone, including women and girls, at affordable prices and, where necessary, free of charge. The use of special condoms for women is also being promoted through development cooperation.
